Participating in Research

Patients receiving cochlear implants at the University of Miami Cochlear Implant Center have the option of being involved in clinical research. Some studies are simply a collection of data during normal implant programming. Others involve the use of brand new, cutting edge devices, which are part of a “clinical trial”. Clinical trials use devices that are past the experimental stage and have FDA endorsement for limited “pre-market” use with volunteers. All studies have Institutional Review Board approval and monitoring.

It is perfectly acceptable for patients to choose to not be involved in research projects. If you are interested in participating in research, you will need to learn all the details.
