Clinical Study of the Nucleus® Hybrid Cochlear Implant in Adults

This study is for adult subjects who have a very specific type of hearing loss and for patients who have not received a cochlear implant. Subjects to be considered have normal or near normal hearing for the lower pitches of the hearing range and a much greater loss for higher pitches. Subjects must be 18 years of age or older at the time of cochlear implantation. A specifically designed modified cochlear implant will be inserted into the cochlea only in the higher pitch region and the recipient will wear a hearing aid (if necessary) in the same ear.

Bilateral Benefit in Adult Users of the HiRes® 90K Bionic Ear System

This study is for adult subjects who have severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears who are candidates for cochlear implantation and desire bilateral implants. The HiResolution® Bionic Ear is a surgically implanted device designed to provide improved hearing and perception of speech to people with severe or profound hearing loss who obtain limited benefit from conventional hearing aids. Subjects must be 18 years of age or older at the time of cochlear implantation. Eligible subjects will be implanted with two HiResolution® Bionic Ear prostheses on the same surgical date. The study will investigate bilateral versus unilateral benefit in adults who are implanted with two Bionic Ears and will evaluate the bilateral benefit of HiResolution® sound processing and conventional sound processing in the same subject
