About Us

The University of Miami Cochlear Implant Program is one of the largest and busiest in the world. Our location allows for extensive Latin American outreach. Patients, therapists and surgeons routinely come to the University of Miami for surgery, research and training. The Ear Institute’s Microsurgery Training Center has served as one of the major resources for training cochlear implant surgeons. Similarly, the adult and children’s cochlear implant audiologists have trained audiologists and speech pathologists from throughout the World.

The program has hosted several international scientific cochlear implant congresses including the Eighth International Cochlear Implant Conference (CI 2000) that attracted over 1200 participants. That meeting stands as the largest meeting dedicated to cochlear implantation ever held. Team members have participated in virtually all major cochlear implant meetings as advisory and planning committee members as well as speakers.

The Children’s Center was added in 2000 with support from Pentland Hall of Miami-Dade County and the Star Foundation of New York. There, children and families are provided with pre-operative evaluations, educational guidance and post-operative auditory/verbal therapy. Our relationship with the Debbie School Program for Deaf Children continues to expand and we provide services directly in that location. The team visits Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach schools as well as schools in the Orlando, Naples and Melbourne areas several times each year with visits to classrooms as well as medical facilities. School visits allow the team to develop interactive relationships with public and private schools and to be involved in our pediatric patients’ linguistic and educational developments.
